ERBIL — The remnants of the Islamic State (IS) are planning terrorist attacks from Camp Al-Hol in Syria to target the Kurdistan Region and other areas in the neighborhood, said Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani in a statement made to Asharq Al Awsat.
PM Barzani mentioned an IS cell recently captured in Erbil who had a plan to carry out terrorist attacks in the capital of Kurdistan Region. The group was directed from inside Camp Al-Hol where the plan was set up.
“A terrorist cell affiliated with ISIS has set up its plans in Al-Hol camp to target the Kurdistan region with terrorist operations,” Asharq Al Awsat quoted PM Barzani. “This is a matter of concern, as the terrorist organization ISIS is still a continuous and serious threat. On the inhabitants of many areas in Iraq, through his ability to cross the borders and sneak through them illegally.”
The Kurdish leader emphasized that the presence of the Global Coalition forces is critical to eradicated IS and stabilize the region.
Earlier this week, the Kurdistan Region Security Council (KRSC) released a video showing the confession of five IS members who were arrested before carrying out terrorist attacks in Erbil.
Two of the men said they had illegally cross the border from Syria to Turkey, then to Iran, and from there to Raniya district of Kurdistan Region, to join the other three for the Erbil attack which was set up by IS cell leaders in Camp Al-Hol.
